Chemical Peel
A cosmetic chemical peel is a skin resurfacing procedure that uses a chemical solution to remove the outermost layers of the skin. The procedure is designed to improve the appearance of the skin by reducing fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, hyperpigmentation and acne scars.
During a chemical peel, a solution is applied to the skin, which causes the top layer of skin to peel off. The depth of the peel depends on the type and strength of the chemical solution used, as well as the individual's skin type and concerns. Chemical peels can be classified as superficial, medium, or deep, with each type of peel targeting different skin concerns.
Superficial Peels
The mildest type of chemical peel, a superficial peel only removes the outermost layer of skin. A superficial peel is typically used to improve skin texture, reduce the appearance of fine lines and brighten the complexion. It also helps to clean pores to reduce acne and treat a medical condition called melasma.
Medium Peels
Medium peels penetrate deeper into the skin compared to a superficial peel and can improve the appearance of acne scars, sun damage, age spots, fine lines and wrinkles.
Deep Peels
A phenol peel is considered the deepest and most intensive type of chemical peel and is typically used to improve the appearance of deep wrinkles, severe sun damage and severe acne scars.
Chemical blepharoplasty phenol peels can also be used on the upper eyelids combined with a surgical procedure to remove the excess skin on the eyelids that causes the eyelid to droop. The two procedures combined can tighten the skin around the eyes. This minimally invasive procedure can replace the need for a surgical blepharoplasty for a majority of patients.
